Armenian Studies. An Educational Support Program for Armenian Schools in the Diaspora

The course is a unique journey through time and space, aimed at uncovering the mysteries of the land of Hayk and fostering self-discovery. As we travel through the regions of the Republic of Armenia and Artsakh, we will explore colors, songs, art, language, and get to know various historical figures who lived long before us. We will "converse" with them, try to unveil the secrets they left behind.

This journey is intended to help us better understand ourselves—and through that understanding, learn to love and value ourselves.


Brief Description:

During the course, children will improve their Armenian reading and writing skills, expand their vocabulary, get acquainted with key events in Armenian history, explore Armenian art and folk culture, communicate with their Armenian peers, and participate in educational games, debates, and group projects. They will also engage in projects, discover Armenia’s nature, geography, landmarks, and learn about the daily life and traditions of its people.

Methodological Description:

How can we transform the learning process into a journey that develops the student’s cognitive skills?

The needs and guiding questions lead us to research, followed by the development of a strategy—because it’s not enough to simply present content accessibly or pass on information that students today can easily find online or in books.

A student must learn, apply, and critically evaluate information. It’s essential that the teacher organize learning using methods that make the student an active participant in the process—learning not through the teacher’s instruction, but through the teacher’s guidance.

From our research, we arrive at an important insight: if we want to develop students’ cognitive abilities—such as perception, reasoning, and memory—we must give them the opportunity to process information through their own subjective lens and transform it into knowledge.

Our lessons are designed around the principle of developing cognitive abilities. Each lesson has three levels:

  • The student perceives and receives new information;
  • The student applies what they’ve learned / forms reasoning about it;
  • The student transforms the new information into knowledge and stores it in long-term memory.

The course is designed for children aged 6 to 10 years, the teaching materials are selected according to the principle of "from simple to complex", providing differentiated learning and a child-oriented approach.

The course teaches the sounds and letters of the Armenian language, as well as develops basic reading and writing skills. Learning sounds and letters is followed by learning to read and write words, then learning to read phrases, and then related materials (sentence-story). The scheme of teaching writing is chosen in such a way that the child begins to practice the learned letters as soon as possible, composing words, and then phrases. As a result, the most commonly used letters are taught, all applications of which retain their alphabetical sound.When teaching writing, thematic pictures are given for the development of oral speech, which are saturated with images of objects containing the sounds and letters being taught, and drawings. At this time, the child learns to read several words (vocabulary sets), phrases, as well as small texts.

At the time of writing, the exact graphical representations of the given letter are displayed in upper and lower case.

Then the font shape is analyzed, the separation of the constituent particles is performed, which makes it easier to obtain the font and consolidate the assembly chain.

In parallel with the study of literature, listening to fairy tales, short stories, poems, as well as oral analysis and reproduction with the help of questions are also conducted.

The course also teaches language and grammatical preliminary knowledge: separating sentences from speech, making independent sentences.
